National Recovery Month – September 2024

A Celebration of Hope and Healing

David B Burke Medication-Assisted-Treatment-Programs-Sacramento-and-Bay-Area

National Recovery Month (Recovery Month), which started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.

Since its inception in 1989, National Recovery Month has served as a powerful reminder that addiction is not a life sentence. This annual observance promotes the message that with the right support, recovery is achievable. In addition, it encourages communities, healthcare professionals, and individuals to take an active role in supporting people facing addiction.

For families, this is a time to reflect on the impact of addiction, but also to celebrate the victories, no matter how small, that signify progress. It’s also a month for breaking down the stigma often associated with addiction, shifting the conversation toward hope and healing.

The Importance of National Recovery Month

Every September, the nation comes together to honor National Recovery Month, a time dedicated to celebrating individuals who have fought hard to overcome addiction and reclaim their lives. In 2024, this tradition continues as we raise awareness, reduce stigma, and offer support to those still navigating their journey toward recovery.

At Sierra Health + Wellness Center, we stand firm in our belief that recovery is possible for everyone. Our mission is to provide compassionate, evidence-based interventions and treatments that foster healing, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose. National Recovery Month is a chance for us to shine a spotlight on the personal strength it takes to recover and to highlight the resources available for those in need.

Family Systems Therapy in Addiction Recovery

Our family therapy for addiction in California is designed to address the specific needs of those battling addiction and their loved ones. We understand that each family is unique. Thus, we customize our approach to fit the specific dynamics and challenges of each family unit.

  • Family addiction counseling: This program focuses on healing the wounds inflicted by addiction. Counselors help family members identify and address the various roles they may have adopted that perpetuate addiction. This insight allows for the adjustment of behaviors and fosters a supportive environment conducive to recovery.
  • Family counseling services: Our counseling services extend beyond dealing with addiction to include assistance with co-occurring disorders and the stressors of everyday life that can complicate recovery. These services help families build a stable, supportive home environment.

The family systems model is based on the idea that families become structured around their interactions with substance abuse. By adapting to substance abuse, the family can maintain balance.

However, family interactions involved in adapting to substance abuse are negative.

In family systems therapy a therapist would look for – and attempt to change – negative patterns of communication in families dealing with substance abuse. The family role structures that are required for stability in families with substance abuse (Steinglass et al. 1987) are also explored.

A major goal of family therapy in substance abuse treatment is prevention. It is important to prevent substance abuse from moving to other generations. Multiple studies show that if one person in a family abuses alcohol or drugs – the remaining family members are at increased risk of developing substance abuse problems.

Why Celebrate National Recovery Month?

  1. Raise Awareness: National Recovery Month creates an opportunity for us to share real stories of success and provide crucial information about addiction and recovery. It’s a time for individuals and families to learn more about the services available to them, reducing the barriers to accessing help.
  2. Reduce Stigma: One of the major barriers to recovery is the stigma surrounding addiction. National Recovery Month works to dismantle these misconceptions and change the narrative from one of shame to one of healing and empowerment.
  3. Build Community: For those in recovery, feeling connected to others who understand their journey is critical. Events during National Recovery Month, such as walks, workshops, and sober celebrations, create a sense of belonging and provide inspiration to keep moving forward.
  4. Celebrate Victories: Recovery is hard, and every step forward deserves recognition. National Recovery Month allows people to honor their achievements, no matter how big or small, and encourages them to keep striving for lasting sobriety.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Attend or Host a Recovery Event: Many communities host walks, fundraisers, and sober celebrations. Consider participating or even hosting an event to bring awareness to recovery.
  • Share Your Story: Personal stories are powerful tools for breaking down stigma. If you or a loved one has experienced recovery, consider sharing your journey on social media using #RecoveryMonth2024.
  • Support a Loved One: If someone in your life is in recovery, use this month as an opportunity to offer your support. A simple act of kindness or a thoughtful message can go a long way in showing them that you care.
  • Advocate for Policy Change: Use your voice to advocate for policies that improve access to treatment, support recovery programs, and reduce the stigma of addiction.
